“We are at the forefront of telling our own narrative. It’s not at the hands of other people who are outside the community anymore. It’s so dreamy—- I just feel so blessed to have lived long enough to see this day.” – Billy Porter
Today is the National Day of Silence for all members of the LGBTQIAA+ community who have experienced harassment and discirmination.
We all want a safe space everywhere we go, right? And why so? Because a safe space is especially important because it is where individuals can feel that they are valued, be open about themselves, and create confidence and battle their weaknesses. The workplace should be a place where an individual is not afraid to show who they are so they can provide input on how to build a safe and protective environment for the LGBTQIAA+ community. They should not be treated differently because we are all unique in our own ways and it is important for them to feel that they fit in the workplace.
To motivate one another, here are some tips on how you can promote and pay the kindness forward!
- Educating ourselves and people around us, trying to learn about the community so we can be sensitive and aware of the gender spectrum.
- Ask questions with permission as not everyone is comfortable with the way you respond to their identity. Be open to change and open minded to learning about a community you may not know much about.
- Affirmation. Telling them that you are perfect just the way you are will definitely boost their confidence and will make them feel valued.
- Shut down the behavior of anti-LGBTQIIA+, don’t be afraid to stand up for yourselves and be an ally to them.
