Every HR lead planning team building hits the same fork in the road: do we run it ourselves to save money, or hire a team building facilitator in the Philippines? Both are valid — but they get you very different outcomes. Here’s an honest comparison so you can decide where your budget is best spent.
The DIY route
You plan the games, brief the team, and run the day yourself (usually with a few volunteers from HR or the team leads).
What it’s good for:
- Small teams (under ~20) who already get along
- Tight budgets and simple goals (“let’s just have fun together”)
- Casual bonding where a rough edge or two doesn’t matter
The hidden costs:
- Your time. Planning, sourcing materials, and running logistics is real work — often 20–40 hours you don’t see on the invoice.
- No neutral facilitator. When HR runs the games, HR can’t fully participate — and hierarchy stays in the room.
- Weak debriefs. The bonding lives in the conversation after each activity. Untrained facilitators tend to skip or fumble it.
- Uneven energy. Keeping 50+ people engaged all day is a skill; without it, momentum dies after lunch.
The professional facilitator route
You bring in a team building facilitator whose entire job is designing and running the day.
What you’re actually paying for:
- Program design mapped to a goal. Communication? Post-merger bonding? A pro builds the flow around your objective, not a random games list.
- Neutral facilitation. An outsider can push, tease, and challenge every level — including leadership — in a way internal staff can’t.
- Energy management. Reading the room, adjusting on the fly, and keeping 100 people engaged from morning to awarding.
- Real debriefs. Turning “that was fun” into actual insights the team carries back to work.
- Logistics off your plate. Equipment, emcee, scoring, safety — handled, so HR can actually enjoy the day too.
Side-by-side
| DIY | Professional facilitator | |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Lower | Higher |
| HR’s time cost | High (hidden) | Low |
| Tied to a real goal | Rarely | Yes |
| Neutral facilitation | No | Yes |
| Debrief quality | Hit or miss | Structured |
| Best for | Small, casual teams | Bigger teams, real objectives |
So which should you choose?
- Go DIY if your team is small, the goal is simply fun, and someone genuinely enjoys planning it.
- Hire a team building facilitator if your team is 30+, you have a real objective (communication, silos, post-merger, morale after a hard year), or HR is already stretched thin. The per-head cost buys back your time and a materially better outcome. See our full breakdown of team building costs in the Philippines to budget either way.
The honest middle ground: many teams hire a facilitator for the main program and keep the casual stuff (potlucks, small celebrations) in-house.
The bottom line
DIY saves money on the invoice but spends it in HR’s hours and a weaker result. A team building facilitator costs more upfront but ties the day to a real goal, keeps everyone engaged, and takes the logistics off your plate. If it matters, don’t wing it.
