What Water Does For You
Water plays various pivotal roles in our own bodies every single day. It helps regulate our body temperature, keeps our joints lubricated so we can move around pain-free, prevents infections, delivers nutrients to our cells, is a big component of blood, and keeps our organs functioning.
More specifically, the kidneys are one of the key organs that are affected by our hydration levels. Without drinking enough water and keeping our hydration levels up, our kidney function can suffer causing more problems in the future. As mentioned, another very important factor for staying hydrated is regulating body temperature. With the coming summer months in the Philippines, and the incredibly hot weather now, remember to keep drinking water so your body doesn’t overheat.
Poor Hydration Affects Your Ability To Function
If you have low fluid levels or are dehydrated, you may feel dizziness, headaches, lethargy, have poor concentration, and dry mouth. Fill up a water bottle or a nice tall glass and keep it next to you for easy drinking access. Staying hydrated can improve your sleep quality, mood, energy levels, and brain function.
As much as possible, make sure you’re not only drinking coffee and soft drinks during the day. Too many soft drinks and sweetened coffees can spike your blood sugar levels and cause you to crash, making you feel even more tired and lethargic. Also, be careful of excessive alcohol intake as it can affect your kidney functions as well.
How Do I Know I’m Drinking Enough?
You’ll know you’re drinking enough water by the color of your urine. Aim for a nice pale, straw, yellow color, and avoid a dark yellow color as much as possible! Also, don’t just wait until you feel thirsty- at that point your body is already dehydrated! Remember that just because you drink water until you’re not thirsty, doesn’t mean you’re 100% hydrated either. Drink water continuously throughout the day.
Cheers! Enjoy your refreshing glass of water this World Kidney Day.
